Self-Healing Polymers Make For Self-Healing Robots

Robotic teams everywhere are working on soft robots, because many situations need a gentle touch. Soft robots can squish into tight locations, pick up fragile objects without breaking them and more. However soft robots are obviously more easily damaged as well. Say a soft robot encounters something with sharp edges. Well, that soft material is damaged and basically the equivalent of a human with an open wound. To solve this, a team of researchers from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium have developed a way to create soft machines that can heal themselves. The method is simple. They just use heat. In the video below, a robotic hand has artificial muscle that has self-healing properties. The hand gets stabbed and then proceeds to repair itself. The material is made of jelly-like rubbery polymers with many strands that reorganize and lock together when heat is introduced. This basically means that...

OJO Nintendo Switch Dock And Projector

One of the coolest things about the Nintendo Switch compared to other gaming consoles is the portability factor. You can take it with you and play games on the go and when you are home you can just dock it and play on your TV. But what if your TV isn’t available? Maybe your wife is watching Netflix, or maybe there is no TV where you are. The OJO projector is here to fill this niche. The OJO is being called the world’s first projector for the Nintendo Switch. You just dock the Switch and project your game onto another surface, like the wall. It claims to be able to project images as large as 120-inches at 200 lumens, and it has a 20,000mAh battery that lets you charge the Switch on the go, and other mobile devices too. This device is sure to be handy for gamers...

This Personal Helicopter Looks Like a Drone

Loveland, Ohio company, Workhorse, has created a personal helicopter that is basically an oversized drone. It runs on electricity and gas and goes by the name “SureFly”. This drone is a two seater that has eight counter-rotating motors on four arms. It will fly at a range of 70 miles, and even has a backup battery that gives you five extra minutes of flight for safe landing. Yep, just little a drone. You would think that in a drone this size, you would get more than 5 extra minutes of flight time from a backup battery. You better bequick about whatever you need to do in that time. The SureFly is set to go into production in 2019, but if you have the disposable income, you can pre-order it right now from Workhorse’s website. It will cost you around $200,000. It is designed for safe and easy flight....

Deeper Lock Bike Security Lock Makes Your Bike Extra Safe

Bike theft is a very common thing, sadly. These days thieves have more tools than ever in fact. It only takes a few seconds for a good thief to break your lock and be gone with your expensive bike. Luckily for bike riders, the ‘Deeper Lock’ Bike Security Lock is here to help. Unlike other locks and theft deterrents, this lock is permanently attached to your bicycle and can be activated to immobilize your bike. Your typical lock only secures your bike to something else, or will lock up your tires if you run a cable through them with a lock. This is a more true anti-theft device since the thief can’t easily get rid of it. The lock uses a loud alarm system that will sound if the bike is moved or if a thief tries to steal it. And if they do steal it, the GPS...

This Is What Happens When You Microwave An Airbag

We all have our hobbies. Some people relax by playing video games, for others gardening is a great way to pass the time. Binge watching your favorite Netflix series in one sitting is a good choice too. The Slow Mo Guys? They like to do things like deploying airbags in microwave ovens. To each their own. Sure, it is fun to destroy things, but this is also for science. They wanted to capture the destruction at 2,000 frames per second to see exactly what happens. We all love to watch things getting demolished, right? Of course we do. But also science! So what did their “research” find? Well, it is pretty much what you would expect. The first microwave gets destroyed, while second microwave’s door shoots off like a missile, launched by some deadly Hot Pocket full of gunpowder. All I can say is, they were lucky that...

TNP USB-C Hub Adds 4K HDMI, Ethernet, USB-A, and USB-C for Charging

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe TNP USB-C Hub is a dongle you can add to your Mac or PC. It adds 4K HDMI, Ethernet, USB-A, and USB-C for Charging or using another USB-C device. I’ve been using with my HP Elite X2 laptop for when I need a Ethernet connection, 2nd monitor, or extra USB device. Ethernet is a 1 Gigabit and transfers data very well within my network. Sometimes I need the wired connection for video and screen-sharing. Ethernet connections have a lower latency, and less chance of getting bumped off the network if too many wireless devices are connected. In connecting to my Vizio M50 4K TV, I had no problem getting the 2160p signal the monitor can produce. I can then use my x2 to present, or watch a video online or one I created. The Elite X2 also has one USB-C...

Sony’s PS4 Outsold Both Xbox One And Nintendo Switch Last Month

It is no secret that Sony’s PS4 console has generally outsold the Xbox One ever since they both came out back in 2013. In fact the PS4 has been in the lead the whole time, even though some months have seen the Xbox One outsell the PlayStation 4 in the United States. And now, the latest figures from The NPD Group show that the PlayStation 4 has outsold not just the Xbox One, but also the relatively new Nintendo Switch in the United States last month. This is surprising since the Switch is so new still. Both Microsoft and Sony have released several versions of these consoles. Sony added the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 4 Slim to their lineup, while Microsoft launched the Xbox One S and will release the Xbox One X very soon. So there are a lot of factors at work here, one of them...

The VR180 Video Owl: Recording Stereo 180 Degree VR

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at Vidcon, I ran into Mark W. Gray, and his daughter, Fiona, along with a very interesting owl. It is not really as much a prop as what it can do – create stereoscopic VR180 Video. YouTube Announcement at Vidcon – VR180 Last week I reported on YouTube announcements. One announcement dealt with VR180 (video link queued up for you). This is a form of video where you only see the front side of 360 video. Just like if you were there. Looking behind you won’t matter, as you see nothing past the first 180 degrees. For creators, this allows a focus on the important content – an interview being conducted, a race being run, band playing, etc. Stereoscopic VR180 If you own a VR unit such as Google Cardboard, Oculus, or another headset, you will be able to set...

SmallHD Focus External Monitor with Visibility in Daylight

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSAs a sole camera operator in my travels, I find it difficult at times to see the camera screen. The new Canon M5 screen doesn’t articulate right, so sometimes I have to frame a videos, then trust it’s position. If I had to do a close-focus shot from a lens, that could definitely go south. SmallHD makes video monitors for your camera. Not only ones that allow you to position for yourself, but also ones that add extra features so your camera shot is the best it can be. With a full touchscreen, the 5 inch Focus is for the Vlogger or Video podcaster like myself. About the SmallHD Focus The Focus will show you a 720p resolution video, 294 PPI, and 800 nits. Cam Caddie Lightweight Handle Helps Stabilize Video

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSCameras are getting smaller and harder to grip at times. If you are trying to get video at cool angles, it’s harder to hold the camera and keep it stabilized. That is where Cam Caddie can help. Their lightweight handles allow you to not only hold the camera in positions that keep you upright, but also add lights, microphones, monitors, and even a second camera to get a backup shot. I checked out the Scorpion EX at Vidcon. This device can hold my Canon M5 camera without issue. The Rode camera mic could actually get positioned closer to the interview subject. An amazing system and the price was too good to not purchase one ($59.99). You can get a Scorpion EX here.

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIf you’ve played guitar, you’ve seen other’s guitar pedal rigs. A big box filled with pedals and power cords so they can get the right sound for a song. But what if you could jam that all into one pedal?
